Join us for an evening of new sound works curated by sonic artist and Associate Professor at Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music, Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, Dugal McKinnon.

The event features new works from NZSM postgraduate students and staff, including immersive audio works, live ambient performance, VR soundscapes, a generative soundscape for icosahedral loudspeaker, and a collaborative performance with tāonga puoro. These new works are contextualised in a sonic field created by third-year Sonic Arts students in response to Energy Work: Kathy Barry/ Sarah Smuts-Kennedy. Dr Dugal McKinnon is the Deputy Director of NZSM and Co-Director of the Lilburn Studios for Electronic Music. He is a composer and sound artist whose output encompasses electronic, acoustic, visual and textual media, and often intermeshes these. Recent work includes Path 99 (with Grayson Cooke), which premiered in the 2021 New Zealand International Film Festival, and VEX (2020), a live modular synth performance for the City Gallery’s Terminal exhibition.

Jerome Kavanagh (Mokai Patea, Maniapoto, Kahungunu, Irish: Caomhanach) is the CNZ/NZSM Composer-in-Residence 2022. He is a Grammy award-winning featured solo artist and internationally renowned Māori Taonga Puoro practitioner. Recent film score compositions include The Dead Lands (2020, Shudder-USA/TVNZ) with Lachlan Anderson, and Avatar 2 (forthcoming).

Michael Norris is a composer, software developer and music theorist. He teaches composition at NZSM, is editor of Wai-te-ata Music Press, and directs Stroma New Music Ensemble. In 2020 for the third year in a row he was awarded the SOUNZ Contemporary Award at the APRA Silver Scrolls for Mātauranga (Rerenga). His suite of real-time audio effects, 'SoundMagic Spectral', is widely used including by artists such as Aphex Twin and Brian Eno.

Current and former NZSM students featuring: Liam Frizzell a Wellington based sonic artist with a BMus (Hons); Ben Leonard (BJ Leo) a sonic artist and current post-graduate student focusing on spectral decomposition and spatialisation; Sonya Waters a 2021 MMA graduate in Sonic Art who has recently released her ambient influenced album The Sheltering Ranges (2021) on LA label Cudighi Records; Jimi Wilson a current Doctoral Student with a background in multichannel sound design, field recording and VR, working on projects such as Te Kura O Te Kauri (2022), Whakikitenga (Maoriland Film Fest, 2020) and Minimum Mass (2020, Tribeca Film Festival); and, third year Electronic Music, Sound Design and Spatial Audio students.
